Review
First of all, Director Mani Ratnam has to be appreciated for his efforts to make Ponniyin Selvan as a Movie. He has done an Excellent job.
In the Sevur battle, Aditha Karikala cholan beheads Veerapandiyan.
A Comet appears in the sky which is believed to be a bad omen for cholas as the appearance of a comet indicates a future death of a royal family member.
King Sundara Chozhar(Prakash Raj) has two sons and a daughter. Aditha Karikalan(Vikram) and Arul mozhi varman (Jayam Ravi). Kundhavai (Trisha)
Aditha Karikalan and Vandhaya Thevan (Karthi) from Vanarkulam goes for a war against Rashtragudas and become victorious in the battle.
Through Intelligence, Aditha Karikalan comes to know that there is some sort of ploy against chola kingdom. He asks Vandhaya Thevan to figure out what's happening and relay the message to Sundara Chozhar and Kundhavai. On his way Vandhaya Thevan meets Aazhwarkadiyan (Jayaram). Vandhaya Thevan visits Kadamboor palace on his way and understands the ploy against cholas made by Pazhuvettayargal (Sarath Kumar and Parthiban) and petty kings. Pazhuvettayargal forms a ploy to make Madhurandhagar (Rahman) as the Successor after King Sundara Chozhar. Nambi is foster brother of Nandhini. Nandhini is wife of Periya Pazhuvettayar.
Vandhayathevan meets Nandhini on his way and tells her that Nambi has a message for her. Nandhini gives her ring to Vandhaya Thevan and asks him to meet her at the palace. Vandhaya Thevan makes a visit to palace to meet Sundara chozhar where he is intervened by Chinna pazhuvettayar. He shows the ring to chinna pazhuvettayar saying that it was given by Periya pazhvettayar to him. Vandhayathevan meets Sundara chozhar and conveys the ploy that's made against chola kingdom. He also meets Nandhini and informs about the ploy. Nandhini shows an escape way to Vandhaya Thevan on a condition that he should bring back the reply of Kundhavai after meeting her.
Aditha Karikalan wins the battle of kanchi. Karikalan has a message that he has to return back to Tanjore. He refuses to return to Tanjore because of his past. In the past Aditha Karikalan loved Nandhini (Aishwarya Rai) but wasn't accepted by the Royal family as she was an orphan. After many years, Aditha Karikalan sees Nandhini with Veera Pandiyan (Naaser) in a hut. Out of rage, he beheads Veerapandiyan in front of Nandhini. Nandhini wants to revenge chola family for Veerapandiyan's death. Nandhini is now married to Periya Pazhuvettayar.
Vandhaya Thevan escapes and meets Kundhavai. After knowing that there is a ploy against chola kingdom, Kundhavai asks Vandhaya Thevan to visit Sri Lanka and bring back Ponniyin Selvan aka Arul mozhi varman. Meanwhile, Chola kingdom has a threat from an external force too...That is, Aabathudhavigal from Pandiya kingdom headed by Ravi dasan (Kishore) who wants to revenge chozhas for Veera Pandiyan's death.
Kundavai visits Tanjore and informs Sundara Chozhar about the conspiracies made by Pazhuvettayargal. The Faceoff scene between Kundhavai and Nandhini has been filmed well. The scene where Kundhavai talks about the marriage of Arul mozhi varman has been filmed well... Pazhuvettayargal manipulate and orders a convoy to bring back Arul mozhi varman to Tanjore. Sundara Chozhar orders Kundhavai to meet Aditha Karikalan. Kundhavai meets Aditha Karikalan. He refuses to come back to Tanjore.
Arul mozhi varman goes for a war against Raja Mahinda and wins the battle.
.Aabathudhavigal come to Sri Lanka...Varagunan(Arjun Chidambaram) ties up with Raja Mahinda to attack Arul mozhi varman. Vandhaya Thevan visits sri lanka travelling in a boat that's piloted by Poonguzhali. Vandhaya Thevan meets Arul mozhi varman and relays the message of Kundhavai and Vanathi. Nambi also arrives. Nambi later reveals that he is a spy of Aniruddha Brahmarayar and Sembian Maadhevi. Nambi conveys that there is a threat to cholas from Aabathudhavigal..
What happened to the ploy that was made by pazhuvettayargal and petty kings? What happened to the ploy made by Aabathudhavigal? Who is oomai rani?
Ponniyin Selvan 1 ends with Arul mozhi varman falling in sea. Oomai Rani comes to rescue him. The Second part of Ponniyin Selvan comes in 2023.

Visual representation is different from Written representation...It is practically difficult to condense the entire book in 3 hours...Mani Ratnam has delivered his best...However, there will be comparisons and criticisms which cannot be avoided...
